Lieut.-General “Straffer” Gott and his wife were good friends of the Oppenheimer’s. Gott was killed during World War II, August 7th 1942, while flying to North Africa to take command of the British Eighth Army from Claude Auchinleck, because the Germans mistakenly believed Churchill was on the flight and shot it down. After Gott’s death the posting was then given to Field-Marshall Montgomery. The two families remained friends after the war, and beyond, and the Oppenheimers and Pragers used to spend holiday time at the Gott`s country home `Beniguet`, in Trebetherick, North Cornwall when the Gotrts were not using it.
